How It Works

1. Selecting candidates

The organization working in Sierra Leone for CVMC is called SCHDO (Sierra Canadian Humanitarian and Development Organization). This organization is responsible for finding farmers who fit the requirements needed for the project.

2. Ordering Chickens

SCHDO will order 2000 chicks for the first 10 farmers and 1 village from a hatchery in Guinea (neighbouring country) and will raise these chicks in a growing house from day 1 up to 17 weeks of ages (almost four months).

3. Training the farmer

These farmers will receive training in poultry management, microcredit, farming as a business and personal financial management.

4. Receiving the chickens

They will receive their chickens at 17 weeks of age.

5. Buying the feed

The farmers will buy feed from the SCHDO feed mill for their chickens.

6. Supervising the process

A SCHDO poultry manager will supervise the farmers and give them technical advice.

7. Marketing of product

The eggs are marketed locally with SCHDO assistance.

8. Managing of money

The money is used to sustain the farm, feed the chickens and pay off the chickens bought.

9. Using Manure

The farmers also make significant profit on the chicken manure which is used as fertilizer for their crops or they can sell it to other farmers.

10. Repeating the process

Once the 10 farmers are set up and their flocks are in production, a second group of 2000 chicks raised in the growing barn will be distributed to the next 10 farmers and one village.
